Medical Update!

2011 has been a banner year for CF research and care for those living with cystic fibrosis. The CF Foundation and Vertex Pharmaceuticals have been working for a decade to discover and develop potential therapies aimed at repairing the defective CFTR protein that causes CF, and we are seeing amazing results. On October 19, 2011, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced it submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a potential new CF therapy, VX-770 - under its new proposed trade name, KALYDECO™. If approved, it will be the first drug on the market that targets the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis. Therapies available to people with CF to date only treat symptoms of the disease. The company is seeking approval for the drug in people with cystic fibrosis age 6 and older who carry at least one copy of the G551D mutation of cystic fibrosis.

"The CF Foundation is thrilled that KALYDECO is on track for possible FDA approval in 2012," said Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., President and CEO of the CF Foundation. "This is a significant step forward in our collaboration with Vertex and is further validation of the CF Foundation's drug development strategy. We remain committed to accelerating the development of similar targeted medicines that will benefit all people with cystic fibrosis."

CureFinders - Fall 2011

CureFinders is kids helping kids!  It is t he CFF's fundraising program for kids, young adults, and schools and is easy to implement in any school or community group!

The typical program consists of children and/or young adults competing to raise the most money within their school, whether it is a competition among classrooms, grade levels or groups of students.  It can even be a Senior Project!

This fall we made a significant push and surpassed our $25,000 goal for the year!  In fact, we raised more than $30,000!  We would like to give a "shout out" to one school in particular... and that is Charlotte Preparatory School.  This was their first year participating with CureFinders and they chose to raise their funds through a 5k Race.  Pictured below is the CureFinders team and CF Ambassador, Cale DeJarnett with the race winner, Robbie.

How Can I Help?

Great volunteers are the keys to the continued success of the CF Foundation.  Know any Charlotte singles who would be perfect Bachelors/Bachelorettes in Guys & Dolls?  Maybe your company is looking for a team building opportunity like Great Strides, Kick CF or Cycle for Life?  Even if you just would like to attend...

Give us a shout!

Thank You To Our Sponsors!
